Merrit Cherry, PA-C
Merrit is not a native Texan, but he has called Texas home for the last six years. Born and raised in Idaho, he spent his free time outside camping, hiking, motorcycling, skiing, and earning his Eagle Scout Award. In addition to earning a Bachelor of Science Degree, he later achieved a Master of Science in Microbiology from Idaho State University. His thesis subject concerned using particle accelerators to evaluate the mechanisms underlying the radiation resistance of extremophilic bacteria. Following his scientific interests, he then decided to pursue a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Texas A & M and moved to Texas in 2011.
To become better acquainted with a big, new community, he started volunteering every weekend at Habitat for Humanity as well as the local hospital. Within a short time he became addicted to the joy that came from serving others and focusing and contributing to their successes. Changing course because he wanted a job that made a difference in other people’s lives, he withdrew from the Ph.D. program, worked full time, and took classes to earn a Master of Physician Assistant Studies Degree from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, TX. Merrit is board certified and licensed to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication.
Merrit’s wife, Dantzel, is a Pilates instructor and an author who publishes science fiction and fantasy. Their beautiful four year-old daughter, Roslin, attends Montessori school, and her golden hair attracts too much attention when the family is out in public. If Merrit is not under the hood of a vehicle repairing an engine or in his lab extracting DNA from electrophoresis gel, he can be found playing drums, building wood, metal, or electronic devices in his garage, reading, spending time with friends, or riding bicycles with the family.
As a philomath with a wide range of interests, Merrit chose to join Family Medicine Associates because he believes that primary care is the most important field of medicine and that this clinic provides a broad range of services that make it stand out from the rest. The providers here sacrifice much of their personal time to the comprehensive care of each person, and as Merrit’s family knows well, this sacrifice is one he is willing to make in order to be a steward unto others seeking better health.
When it comes to the challenge of obtaining and maintaining health and wellness, Merrit asserts a unique philosophy he hopes will help others as much as it has helped him: "You can have anything you want if you will give up the belief that you can’t have it."
